Custom Dyno Tuning:
Keith has been tuning EFI cars
on various dynos since the late
90’S before he decided on the
“Dyno Dynamics” dyno from
Australia in 2003. This is the
same dyno that Peter Star (Star
Performance) uses when doing R&D
for “Holden”. The dyno has what
is called a steady state
feature, this allows the tuner
to lock the load of the car into
a parameter where you maybe
having an issue. This will allow
the tuner to pin point the
problem so it can be resolved.
It also allows the tuner to
properly tune all the fuel (VE
or Maf) and timing tables (Low
load or High load-PE/WOT) over
the entirety of its cells. A
load bearing dyno applies a load
to the car to help simulate its
weight and an optimum traction
condition which aids in a proper
& safe tune. Without a proper
load a tuner can put to much
spark in various cells which
will show up as an increase in
power on the dyno but on the
road can cause detonation
(Pre-ignition) which will result
in less power than the car made
on the dyno & can severely
damage the engine. By tuning a
car with a load you not only get
good results under wide open
throttle but your car will have
good transient fueling so it
will perform just as well under
part throttle. In addition to
the dyno with its wide band we
also have a 5-Gas Analyzer;
sometimes referred to as a smog
machine (We do NOT do smogs).
This can help to diagnose a
problem and in some instances
aid in tuning a car. When tuning
a car there is very little
airflow through the radiator
since the car is not moving so
to help keep the car cool we
have a 12,000 cfm swamp cooler
to aid in keeping the engine
temperatures at a safe level.
Keith has been tuning EFI cars
since the late 90’s and has a
wide range of knowledge in the
computer programming field. For
the newer Chevy vehicles we have
“LT-1 Edit”, “LS-1 Edit” & “EFI
Live”, for the Fords vehicles we
use “SCT Custom Tuning
Software”, for the Chryslers we
use “Diablo Sport” and for the
stand alone systems we primarily
use “Accel” GEN VII or John
Meany’s “Big Stuff 3”. The stand
alone systems are primarily used
for race applications or for the
older cars that desire the
power, dependability, drive
ability & gas mileage that
modern day electronic fuel
injection offers.
One must understand that a dyno
is just another tool that is
used to safely find the maximum
power potential of you
combination & precisely dial in
the drivability. There are those
who down size dynos and their
roll in tuning a car properly,
some say street tuning is
better. Most of these people
make this claim because they can
not afford a good load bearing
dyno and are trying to generate
business by false claims. If
they are successful enough to
stay around then they will
eventually end up with a dyno.
